New Residents

Getting A License
New B.C. residents who hold a driver's licence from another jurisdiction should apply for a B.C. driver's licence as soon as they become residents in this province.

Non-residents (e.g., tourists) are permitted to drive in British Columbia for up to six months if they hold a valid driver's licence from another province, state or country. This provision does not apply once a person ordinarily resides in British Columbia.

Graduated Licensing
New residents are not required to enter Graduated Licensing if they can prove that they hold (or have held) a valid, equivalent, full privilege driver's licence (not a learner's licence).

Valid Driver's Licences
If you hold a Canadian or American passenger car or motorcycle operator's licence, or a Japanese Ordinary Driver's Licence or a Canadian licence equivalent to a B.C. Class 1-4 licence, and the licence is valid (or expired less than 90 days) you only need to take a vision screening and meet B.C.'s medical fitness standards. When you qualify, we'll issue you an equivalent class B.C. driver's licence.

Expired Driver's Licences
If your out of province licence has been expired for more than 90 days, you'll need to pass the road signs test, knowledge test, vision screening and the Class 5 or Class 6 road test (as applicable).

Changing, Renewing or Replacing a Licence
Address Changes
You are required by law to notify the Registrar of Drivers and Vehicles within 10 days if your address changes.

You can update your driver's licence in person, at any Driver Services Centre. If you hold an ICBC insurance policy, you can update your insurance documents and your address on your driver's licence at your Autoplan broker. Your broker will print you a new insurance document with the correct address and will notify ICBC to send you an address sticker to attach to the back of your driver's licence.

You can also update the address on your driver's licence by writing to the Registrar of Drivers and Vehicles at this address:

The Registrar of Drivers and Vehicles
P.O. Box 5050,
Station Terminal
Vancouver, B.C.
V6B 9Z9

Please note your name, driver's licence number, old address and new address when you write to us.

Lost Licences
If your licence is lost or damaged, please go to a Driver Services Centre for a replacement.

When you come in, you'll need to show us primary and secondary identification and pay a replacement fee.

If your licence expires within the next six months, you may renew your licence when you replace it. In this situation, you would pay only the renewal fee (you don't have to pay the replacement fee).

Name Changes
If your name has changed, you're required to have your driver's licence changed to show your new name.

To make the change, please go to a Driver Services Centre. When you come in, we'll need to see legal proof of your change of name, such as a Marriage Certificate or Change of Name Certificate.

Renewals
Your photo driver's licence expires on your birth date. The expiration date is shown on your licence. Driver's licences may be renewed up to six months before the expiry date.
