Salt Spring Island, with a population of 9000, is the largest of the Gulf Islands, a group of islands that are located beside the South East shores of Vancouver Island. There are some 200 islands, many of them uninhabited, with grassy woodlands and tranquil waters, studded with inlets, bays, beaches and promontories.

The area has a Mediterranean type of climate that tends to be dry and cool. The islands lie in the rain shadow of Vancouver Island's mountains, with an annual precipitation of only about 84 centimeters.

With it's sunshine and scenery, Salt Spring is an artist's paradise and there are many galleries and craft studios. The island has a strong and vital sense of community, live entertainment of every sort, and a very talented local theatre can be enjoyed year round.

The area is a hiker's paradise, and the Trail and Nature Club caters to all levels and ages. With it's rich sea life, many and varied islands and inlets, and mild climate, the area is a paradise for those who enjoy sailing, fishing or kayaking. There is an excellent 9 hole golf course, and tennis courts available to the public.

The island also provides schooling for other Gulf Islands, and has one of the most highly rated little hospitals in Canada.

The area is readily accessible, with the ferry terminal at Fulford Harbour only ten minutes away, and the float plane service from Ganges Harbour to Vancouver only 30 minutes away. Please see maps.
